I am writing this in a heatwave, and I can feel it. Not metaphorically — I can feel the essay getting worse. Past thirty degrees, something in me quietly closes up shop. The sentences come slower, the good connections stop arriving, and a small flat voice at the back of the head just says: naah. Enough. Maybe you know the feeling. This summer, an awful lot of us do.
So I did what I do when a private feeling nags at me: I went looking for whether it's real, or just an excuse. It turns out to be extremely real — and pulling on that one thread unravelled into some of the biggest questions I know how to ask. About history, and who over the centuries got the calm to be curious. About the machines we're now running to stay cool, and what they're doing to the very air. And, in the end, about what a clear mind actually needs — and whether we're building a world that provides it, or quietly taking it away. Let me take you down the thread.
First: yes, the heat really is dulling you
Your body isn't lying to you. Move the slider and watch what the research describes:

Illustrative of a well-documented shape: mental performance tends to peak around 22°C and drop off sharply in sustained heat (studies put the fall on the order of a few percent per degree past the mid-20s). Cold hurts too — just more gently, and we solved it with a jumper.
The shape is well-established. Mental performance tends to peak somewhere around a cool 22°C and fall away as the room heats up — gently at first, then steeply past the mid-twenties. During a Boston heatwave, Harvard researchers (Cedeño Laurent and colleagues) tested students living in dorms with and without air conditioning: the ones in the hot rooms were about 13% slower on cognitive tests and made more errors — a measurable tax, just for the temperature. Economists studying schools (Park and colleagues) found that students simply learn less in hotter years, that sitting an exam on a hot day lowers the score, and — tellingly — that air conditioning erases almost the whole effect. Zoom all the way out to entire economies and the pattern faintly persists: output tends to peak in temperate conditions and sag in the heat, though at that scale it's about crops and labour and tempers as much as anything cerebral.
So the "naah, enough" is not weakness. It's your brain, an organ that burns a fifth of your energy and hates being overheated, telling you the truth. Which raises an irresistible, and dangerous, question.
The leap you must not make
If a hot room slows a person — then over thousands of years, did hot regions think less? Did the heat quietly hold back the places that have it, leaving the cooler latitudes to do the innovating? I felt the pull of that idea, sweating at my desk, and I want to walk you carefully to why it is mostly wrong — because getting this wrong has done tremendous harm.
Here is the disproof, and it's overwhelming. Some of the most staggering achievements in human history came out of blazing heat. Writing and the first cities: Sumer and Egypt, both furnaces. Mathematics and astronomy: the Indus Valley, and classical India, where — as I wrote about in an earlier essay — Āryabhaṭa worked out that the Earth spins and Brahmagupta gave the world zero, in summers that would flatten me completely. The greatest scientific institution of its age, Baghdad's House of Wisdom, ran in the heat of Mesopotamia. The Maya tracked the heavens through jungle humidity; the Khmer built Angkor; Mali's Timbuktu was a university city on the edge of the Sahara. Heat did not stop any of them.
So why does the myth persist? Because someone influential wrote it down. In 1748 Montesquieu argued in The Spirit of the Laws that hot climates make people passive and servile, cold ones vigorous and free — and that flattering idea, that the cool north was simply built to lead, hardened over the next century into race science and a tidy excuse for empire. It is worth knowing the theory exists precisely so you can refuse it. Because when historians actually look, the modern map of rich and poor turns out to be almost the reverse of a heat map: the economists Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson call it the "reversal of fortune" — many of the regions that were richest and most sophisticated in 1500 (Mughal India, the Aztec and Inca heartlands) are relatively poor today, and the thing that flipped them was not the weather but colonial institutions, extraction, and history. Heat taxes the individual, in the moment. It does not doom a people, and it does not explain who ended up wealthy. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something old and ugly.
What actually made the difference
So if it wasn't latitude, what was it? Part of the answer is that we've been asking a lopsided question. It was never simply "hot bad, cold good."
Ask a medieval European. When the climate cooled — the Little Ice Age, roughly 1300 to 1850 — it was catastrophe, not clarity: failed harvests, famine, and the cascade of wars and collapses the historian Geoffrey Parker calls the global crisis of the seventeenth century, which killed a third of the population in some regions. The warmer medieval centuries before it were the good times, when farms and cathedrals spread. Cold, past a point, is every bit as hostile to the life of the mind as heat — it just kills you by starvation rather than by heatstroke. Three hundred years ago a farmer in a cold country couldn't dream of the vegetables an Indian field grew without trying; he survived on meat and what he could store, and spent his cognitive surplus, such as it was, on not dying through the winter.
Which points at the real answer, and it's liberating. What lifted societies was never the temperature outside. It was learning to build a temperate pocket inside — and then having enough security to think in it. Heating is what made cold Europe habitable enough to get clever; later, cooling did the same for hot places. The tech capitals of the world are not clustered where the weather is magically inspiring; they're clustered where people engineered comfortable conditions and built the institutions, the surplus, and the safety that let ordinary minds spend their days curious instead of merely surviving. Give a person a room at 22°C, a full stomach, and the reasonable expectation of a tomorrow, and you'll get science and art and startups out of them, in Bangalore or Boston or Lagos. The climate was never the author. It was, at most, the weather the author had to work around.
But the pocket is getting harder to hold
Here's where the thread tightens, because the thing we quietly relied on — a stable, workable climate we could carve a comfortable pocket out of — is the thing now shifting under us. 2024 was the hottest year in the record, the first to pass 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels; Europe is warming faster than any other continent; the summer 2022 heat killed an estimated sixty thousand people across Europe, and 2003 around seventy thousand. In parts of South Asia and the Gulf, humid heat now flirts with the limit past which a healthy human body simply cannot cool itself — recent research puts that survivable ceiling lower than we'd thought. We are, in other words, pushing more and more of the world, for more of the year, past the sweet spot on that first curve — dragging the planet's room temperature up out of the range where minds do their best work.
And our obvious defence has a sting in its tail.
Air conditioning is a genuine marvel — it has saved countless lives and made whole regions liveable and productive. But scaled to a warming planet it becomes a loop straight out of the Jevons paradox I wrote about last time: cooling your room burns energy and vents heat and emissions into the shared outside, which warms the whole, which demands more cooling. Global cooling demand may triple by mid-century. So there's a real question underneath your instinct about air fresheners and pollutants and AC: are we solving the heat, or retreating from it into sealed, chilled bubbles while the commons bakes — cooling the few rooms we occupy and, in aggregate, heating the one world we share? The technology that rescues us can, left unmanaged, deepen the very thing it rescues us from. (It needn't — clean power, better design, cities built for shade and air can bend the loop. But that's a choice, not a default.)
The older, quieter question
Sit with all that and a much older question surfaces, one humans have been circling for millennia: what is the right relationship between a mind and its conditions? It turns out we've answered it in two completely different directions, in every corner of the world.
Kālidāsa
India · ~5th centuryIn the Ṛtusaṃhāra, 'the medley of seasons', India's great poet reads the whole human heart through heat, monsoon and cool — longing, languor, renewal. Not climate as fate, but climate as feeling: the weather we carry inside us.
Two camps, really: those who ask how to master the conditions (Hippocrates, Montesquieu, Nietzsche), and those who ask how to master the mind regardless of them (Patañjali, the Buddha, the Stoics). Almost everything in this essay lives between those two.
You can hear the two camps arguing across the centuries. On one side, the ones who ask how to master the conditions: Hippocrates linking temperament to climate, Montesquieu (wrongly) making it destiny, Nietzsche literally shopping Europe for the cool Alpine air of Sils-Maria because his thoughts came clearer there. On the other, the ones who ask how to master the mind regardless of the conditions: Marcus Aurelius writing the Meditations on a freezing frontier, insisting you govern only your response to the weather, never the weather; the Buddha's Middle Way; and — most pointedly for this essay — Patañjali, whose Yoga Sūtras define the whole practice as citta-vṛtti-nirodha, the stilling of the mind's fluctuations, and whose word for spiritual discipline, tapas, literally means heat: hardship taken on deliberately, as fuel.
That is the inversion I can't stop thinking about. Our whole modern project points one way — and the yogis pointed the other.
Outward, and inward
The Outward path
Master the conditions, so the mind is free to build the world.
How: Neutralise discomfort — heating, cooling, light, shelter — and point all that freed attention outward, at problems to solve and things to make.
Who: The scientist, the founder, the modern city. The whole project of engineering ideal conditions and then getting to work in them.
The gift: Science, medicine, abundance, the lifting of billions out of mere survival. Almost everything we call progress.
The trap: You can spend your life perfecting the room and forget to ask what you came in to do — and cool your room while cooking the planet.
Are my conditions serving my work, or have I mistaken comfort for the point?
It isn't a contest — a whole life probably needs both, a warm room to build in and a still mind for when the room can't be warmed. The useful question is which one you've been neglecting.
Look at what the two paths actually are. The outward path — the one that built the modern world — says: neutralise the discomfort, engineer the ideal conditions, and pour all that freed attention outward, into building and exploring and solving. It gave us medicine and abundance and lifted billions out of mere survival. It is, rightly, the path most of us are on. But its shadow is the thing this whole essay keeps circling: you can spend your one life perfecting the room and forget what you came into it to do — and you can cool your room while cooking the planet.
The inward path — the yogi in the Himalayan cold, the monk in the bare cell, the Stoic on the frozen frontier — says something almost opposite: don't wait for the conditions to be perfect; train a mind that doesn't need them to be. Those monasteries were built in the high, quiet, difficult corners of the world on purpose. Not because the cold and the silence make you clever, but because a mind that has stopped negotiating with its comfort is finally free to turn around and look at itself. That is a kind of clarity the air conditioner cannot buy.
Here is the thought that unsettles me, writing in the heat. For two centuries the outward path has been winning so completely that we've half-forgotten the inward one even exists — we reach for the thermostat, never the stillness. And yet the climate is now, slowly, taking the perfect room away from us. Which means the old, unfashionable skill — the steady mind that keeps working when the conditions won't cooperate — may be about to become more valuable, not less. The yogis were not running from the world. They were practising, in the hardest possible conditions, exactly the thing a hotter world is going to demand of everyone.
So what is the room for?
I don't have a tidy answer, and I don't think you should trust anyone who offers one. But I know the essay has been quietly asking you a question the whole way down, so let me finally make it loud.
What conditions does your best thinking actually need — and are you giving them to yourself, or drifting through a warm fog wondering why nothing sharp will come? When your body says naah, enough, is that an honest signal to change your environment — to find your own 22°C, your own quiet corner, whatever that is for you — or is it an invitation to build the inner steadiness that doesn't collapse the moment the room gets uncomfortable? Probably, if you're honest, some of both. Most of us are neglecting one of the two paths badly, and we usually know which.
And then the largest version of the same question, the one for all of us at once. We have become extraordinarily good at engineering ideal conditions for ourselves — a cool room, a bright screen, a frictionless day — and we are, at the same time, making the shared world outside those rooms harder to think and live in. So: what is all the outward building for, if it costs us the calm that made us curious in the first place? What's the point of a perfectly cooled room if the reason you wanted to think clearly — to understand something, to make something good, to be at peace — quietly goes missing while you adjust the temperature?
The heat, it turns out, is a small door onto a very old human problem: we are shaped by our conditions, and we spend our lives either changing them or rising above them, and wisdom is mostly knowing which the moment calls for. I still don't write well at thirty degrees. But I've started to wonder whether the discomfort is only an obstacle — or also, if I let it be, a teacher tapping me on the shoulder and asking, in the oldest voice there is: and what, exactly, were you trying to think about?
